Composition
​
The principle alloying element in Grade 5xxx is Magnesium, accounting for up to 6.0% by weight of these alloys. Further alloying elements include; ≤2.8 Zinc, ≤1.8 Tin, ≤1.4 Manganese, ≤1.4 Silicon, ≤0.8 Copper, ≤0.35 Chromium, ≤0.30 Zirconium, ≤0.2 Titanium, ≤0.1 Nickel, ≤0.1 Vanadium, ≤0.05 Gallium & ≤0.0009 Lithium

Machinability

Grade 5xxx Alloys are not generally suitable for machining, with few exceptions.
Weldability
​
Grade 5xxx alloys are almost uniformly excellent for joining via arc welding. Gas welding may be used in the lower grades.
