6xxx Series Aluminium

Magnesium and Silicon are the two primary alloying elements of 6xxx Series Aluminium. In tandem, the two elements create a compound within these alloys termed “Magnesium Silicide” (Mg₂Si), which allows this series of alloys to be heat treated for improvements in strength.

6xxx Series Alloys have a moderate amount of strength, in fact, they possess the least strong grades of the heat-treatable alloys. However, they more than makeup for what 2xxx and 7xxx Series Alloys offer in strength with their excellent corrosion resistance, easy extrusion, and formability, as well as excellent welding and machining characteristics. 6xxx Series Alloys are generally produced as extrusions, with 6063 and 6061 Alloys the most oft extruded grades, but this series of alloys may also be forged or rolled.

With their broad arsenal of useful characteristics, it is no surprise that 6xxx Series Alloys are applied to a vast range of different industries, from leisure and recreation to the automotive sector, via medical applications, and the marine industry.

6xxx Series Alloys machine well, and are known for having excellent welding properties. Filler wire is a must for welding these alloys, with 4043 and 5356 being the most commonly used welding wires for joining these alloys.
