Weathering Steel

Weathering steel is a form of steel with increased resistance to the effects of the elements by means of a protective outer layer, created with a specific composition of copper and nickel, with chromium, silicon, manganese, and phosphorous additions. These elements create a compound that allows the steel to build up a thin wall of oxide on the surface which simultaneously doesn't erode the underlying material whilst preventing further corrosion from external attack.

Due to its excellent corrosion resistance and high tensile strength, large structures such as bridges and building facades, can be built without having to further treat the material in the form of painting or coating, saving maintenance costs and offering a much sought-after patina. Its two most essential properties - corrosion resistance and tensile strength - in unison give this material it's most recognisable trade name: Cor-Ten®, whilst both the ASTM and EN 10025-5 have created standards for Cor-Ten's® equivalents and evolutions.

Further amendments to the composition also improve impact resistance in varying temperatures, generally ranging from -50℃ to room temperatures (J5 - JR.)

Integ Metals supply all of the common weathering steel grades listed below, in all common shapes and forms, so please call, chat, or email with your requirements, or to discuss your needs with one of our experts.
