Ferritic Stainless Steel

Ferritic stainless steels are iron alloys that feature high chromium and very low carbon as their primary alloying elements, with no nickel present. They begin life in the austenitic state and are then subsequently heated and cooled to form a body-centred cubic ferritic structure - the BCC grain structure makes ferritic alloys magnetic. Above 17% chromium, these alloys remain ferritic at all temperatures.

Due to the low carbon content, ferritic stainless steels lack outright strength, toughness, and hardness, but they make up for this with greater ductility and lower brittleness. Further, they exhibit good stress corrosion cracking characteristics, a low coefficient of thermal expansion, and good thermal conductivity.

These alloys are used across a range of industries such as boiler and furnace construction, exhaust systems, high-temperature applications, and in the manufacture of oil and petrochemical industry machinery.

Integ Metals supplies 11 different grades of ferritic stainless steel in total, so please read below for more information on available grades and shapes, or speak to our expert sales team directly.
