7xxx Series Aluminium

The principle alloying element of 7xxx Series Aluminium Alloys is Zinc. With the addition of other alloying elements, such as Magnesium, 7xxx Series Alloys are the strongest of all Aluminium alloys.

 

Whilst being the strongest of all Aluminium alloys, the stronger grades are susceptible to both microsegregation and stress corrosion cracking, so considerations must be made for their application. Additionally, although not to the same extent as 2xxx Series Alloys, some grades do not offer good corrosion protection. As such there are Alclad options available where this property is needed.

These grades are used extensively in the aeronautical, automotive, medical, and leisure & recreation industries.

7xxx Series Alloys machine well, and some grades have excellent welding properties, particularly 7005, which is usually welded uses 5xxx Series welding wire as fillers.
